  • Nigerian Youth Union unites NANS factions

    The Nigerian Youth Union(NYU) on Wednesday hosted the two factions in the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) Zone B, at the NYU National Secretariat Abuja to resolve its factional issues.

    The President of NYU, Mr Chinonso Obasi reiterated that one of the core mandates of the Nigerian Youth Union was to unite the youths and youth organisations in one voice which could not be achieved in a disunited front.

    Obasi, in his speech said that when youths are united, great exploits are achieved but disunity amongst the youths yields unproductivity.

    ” As youths, our pride lies in our strength and numbers but what we do with the strength matters.

    ” I am glad that today Jeremiah Ohomah of Federal University of Petroleum Resource Effurun solicited for me to lead the conciliation meeting between himself and Friday Etinyene of the University of Uyo.

    ” Recall on November 2019, the Godson Okereke led administration held a convention/election in University of Nigeria Nsukka that produced Friday Etinyene as the NANS ZONE B’ Coordinator though Jeremiah Ohomah and supporters rejected the outcome and Jeremiah declared himself as the Coordinator.

    ” The conciliatory meeting had both parties in attendance and the document duly signed by the duo in which Ohomah has agreed and recognised Etinyene as the only coordinator of NANS Zone B(SouthSouth and SouthEast).

    Obasi said the duo resolved to work together in future endeavors and appeal to supporters and well-wishers to see this as the best decision for the zone and the entire Nigerian Students.

    Pastor Ezekiel Odeyemi, Assistant General Overseer of Redeemed Christian church of God at the conciliatory meeting admonished the youth leaders to continue in pursuit of peace and total belief in Nigeria.

    According to the clergy, ”I have seen the good of Nigeria but have not seen the best.

    ” The best of Nigeria is yet to come through the moves Nigerian youth union is taken in reconciling differences amongst youths and youth organisations.”

    Odeyemi thanked Ohomah for accepting Etinyene as the authentic coordinator describing such as the best thing that could be done.

  • NANS crisis: Past leaders sue for peace, unity

    Following the crisis that engulfed the outgoing leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), former leaders of the association from 40 years of inception has sued for peace and unity of the association as a way of moving forward.

    The leaders, in a statement jointly signed by Mr Sunday Danlad, First NANS President 1980/1981 and
    Mr Dennis Inyang, NANS President 1994/1995, called for peace of the association as the only way that would help focus on the interest and welfare of the students body

    Other leaders are Mr Bashir Mukhtar, Senate President 1994/1995, Mr Agafe Ambrose, Director of Sports 1994/1995, Mr Kennedy Tabuko, Former National Financial Secretary,1999/2000, Mr Olayemi Success Vice Pre National Affairs
    2003/2004 and Mr Olayinka Dada,NANS President 2007/2008.

    It would be recalled that a zoom Senate meeting of the association was held sometimes in August which led to the impeachment of the National President of the association, Mr Danielson Akpan over financial impropriety.

    The leaders said that the crisis engulfing NANS was avoidable while calling on all parties to sheathe their swords and allow for peace in the interest of Nigerian students both home and in the diaspora.

    The also noted that opportunities for fair hearing was not adequately granted to the President over allegations leveled against him.

    According to them, once investigated, he should have been referred to the Congress which can only meet at the convention since the Senate can no longer sit rather than the zoom meeting held on his impeachment .

    ” The forum noted that the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) was duly set up prior to the activities that led to the purported zoom impeachment, therefore, signaling the commencement of full transition process.

    ” NANS cannot within the same Executive structure after exhausting legitimate Senate sessions and conduct of the Pre-convention Senate meeting remove, suspend or impeach any official save for congressional decision otherwise known as the NANS convention.

    ” The purported Zoom Senate meeting is unknown to the constitution of NANS as well as not recognised as a legitimate means of removal, suspension or impeachment of any official let alone the NANS President.

    ” The Zoom impeachment is illegal and constitutes an affront on the collective sensibility of stakeholders and Nigerian students, indeed misleading the entire Nigerian public.”

    They therefore called on the outgoing leadership to immediately convene a unity/harmonisation meeting and resolve all matters within the Executive Council amicably, revert to Status Quo Ante and ensure unity.

    ” The CPC set up should intensify efforts at ensuring an all encompassing, free, transparent and fair election to usher in a new set of leadership not later than December, 2020 in accordance with the provisions of the constitution on same.

    ” As former leaders, we reaffirm the leadership of NANS under Mr Danielson Akpan as the incumbent President and urge everyone to allow the transition process to go on as planned.

    ” All aspirants seeking for offices in the next NANS election should refrain from actions inimical to the unity of NANS.

    ” All and sundry should commit to the unity of NANS in their respective sentiments and allow peace to reign for the collective good of Nigerian students whose mandate they exercise in TRUST.” the statement said.

    They further called for the Convention Planning Committee set up by the outgoing leadership to swing into action to elect new executives for the association.

    They added that the committee sould be expanded to accommodate more comrades for harmonisation and solidification of the unity of NANS.
