  • FCTA decries incessant theft of gully inlets, manhole covers

    The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has decried the incessant vandalism and theft of gully inlets, manhole covers and other facilities put in place to tackle flooding within Abuja.

    The Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, said this in Abuja when he visited some of facilities on Saturday.

    Adesola lamented that most of the expensive gully inlet and manhole covers recently replaced by the FCTA have been vandalised and carted away by suspected hoodlums.

    He said that the trend had minimise the performance of the drainage systems, thereby, contributing to flooding in the city.

    “Earlier in the week, we visited the flood sites at Lokogoma and Trademore, amongst others. The destruction caused by the flood in those areas was really touching.

    “We knew that within the city, there are also pockets of flooding in some areas due to minimal performance of our drainages, inspite government efforts to mitigate flooding.

    “As part of efforts to rid off flooding in the city, we visited some of the locations that usually experience flooding during the rainy season to ascertain our efforts in addressing the challenge,” he said.

    Describing flood mitigation as a “collective responsibility”, the Permanent Secretary called for the support of residents and security agencies toward addressing the ugly trend.

    “The manhole covers that were replaced have been removed. They were not removed by ghosts.

    “They were removed by people, and this is Federal Capital City where we have all the law enforcement agencies.

    “We are appealing to every citizen and our law enforcement agencies to support the efforts of the FCTA in protecting lives and property through the provision of quality infrastructure,” Adesola said.

    Speaking on the cost implication of replacing the stolen items, the Permanent Secretary said that each gully inlet cost N500,000.

    He added that the authority had provided between 20 and 30 flood water covers, and one to three manhole covers within a kilometre.

    “Now, if you multiply this by 20 kilometers, 80 kilometers, or 200 kilometers, you know what this will translate to.

    “This underscores the need for everyone to support the efforts of the government to protect road infrastructure against flooding,” he appealed.

    Adesola also cautioned members of the public against indescriminate dumping of refuse on water ways, stressing that gully inlets should not be used as dumpsites.

    The Permanent Secretary was accompanied on the visit by some senior officials of relevant Departments and Agencies in the FCTA.

    Malam Shehu Ahmed, the Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) says the FCT Administration would demolish all structures on waterways across the nation’s capital.

    Ahmed made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

    He said some structures were preventing water from flowing freely through its natural course which was responsible for flooding recorded in some parts of the city.

    ” People are clamoring that we act quickly and take tough decisions to save lives. And this is what we must do. We cannot act as though we don’t see this man-made problem caused by those who violate the Abuja Master Plan.”

    ” Buildings in Trademore Estate had been severally marked for demolition. Warnings have been given year after year but the occupants of the estate keep risking their lives and those of others.

    ” By declaring Trademore a disaster zone, we have told the residents there to evacuate. The area is on a low line zone which is not safe. Flooding can come at anytime. They know this and have been experiencing it over the years”.

    The executive secretary, who is the chairman, Special Ministerial Task Team on Flood Mitigation, revealed that a Police station in Trademore would be demolished and other buildings.

    ” We have The Police station in Trademore would be demolished. It will go alongside other buildings. We have engaged the FCT Police command and have provided a suitable place for them to operate from and fight crime.”

    The executive secretary pointed out that Trademore Estate did not have FCDA Approved building plan and the continuous flooded areas can best be left as Green areas and not residential.

    He explained that the estate was just one of the areas in focus as other areas where structures were built on floodplains would experience removal of illegal structures.

    Natives of Chika and its neighbouring communities of Aleiyita, Galadimawa, Piwoyi and Zhidu are appealing to FCT minister of state Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu for an urgent intervention of Community Senior Secondary school and other social amenities in the area.

    In a combined statement by the President Abuja Original Inhabitants Youth Empowerment Organization AOIYEO Commandant Isaac David, and the Secretary General, Mr Adamu Umar, stated that the communities had reached out to organisation to appeal to the FCTA on their behalf.

    “The communities reached out to us as a platform, to engage the authorities on their pressing need for a Sommunity Senior Secondary school.

    “As a demonstration of utmost good conscience, the community have obtained three (3) hectares of land for this purpose as their own down contribution. Financially, the community is willing to provide support.

    “Equally, several volunteers ranging from builders, supplies, architects and artisans within the communities have pledge to provide the needed professional and support services all in effort to birth a Community Senior Secondary School for the vast population that abound there.

    “Our advocacy for access to basic education for the people demands that attention is given to this and needed actions taken.

    “There is no such school nearby and therefore students are at very high risk of molestation, kidnapping, rape, poor supervision and to cap it all, it puts further economic strain on the parents and family,” he stated.

    The youth president also, appealed to AMAC Chairman to as matter of public important intervene on the lingering issues. (NAN)

  • PPFN task road users on safety to avoid crashes

    The Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) has called on all road users in the country to be conscious and discipline on the road to minimise road traffic accidents.

    Dr Okai Haruna Aku, the Acting Executive Director of PPFN made the call on Thursday in Abuja, during his goodwill remark at the inauguration of a campaign tagged: “Away with One-Way Violation of Traffic: The Evil of Reckless Driving in FCT”.

    The event was organised by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), FCT chapter.

    Aku said that road traffic accident should be a concern to everyone, not just a particular sector.

    “No one is prepared for accident but it can happen any time. All hands have to be on deck to minimise road crashes in the country.

    “There are factors responsible for road crashes; the vehicle, the infrastructure and the human factor, which is the major cause of accident.

    “There is need for a strategic disciplinary action to see that  the road users are discipline to know how to use vehicle, the roads and be conscious of other road users.

    “I call on everybody to be concern. It is teamwork to minimise road traffic accident, not only in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) but also all over the country and the world at large,” Aku said.

    Similarly, Dr Enema Amodu, the Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, FCT chapter said that roads in the federal capital were wide and smooth that people drove recklessly on them.

    “They forget that they are on the road not on a race track, and the way Abuja roads are, if you miss your way, you will have to go a long way and turn to come back on the right track.

    “And most people like short cut in everything they do. Even the security officials are the ones in the lead of violating the traffic rules.

    “When you get to traffic and everyone is going gently, you will see security vehicles going against traffic and everybody will follow.

    “The only way to make it right is this campaign we are doing. We lost Dr Ibrahim Ibrahim, the former Executive Director of PPFN to road crash. A reckless driver following one-way crashed into Ibrahim’s car and killed him.

    “It made everyone to sit up, even though we use to collaborate with FRSC on safety on high ways, but his death made us to take it to a higher level,” Amodu said.

    ACP Chike Nwabuwa of the Operations Department of FCT Police Command attributed alcoholism, substance abuse, ego, lack of coordination on the part of passengers and drivers as responsible for road crashes.

    Nwabuwa called on passengers to always prepare ahead of time and be coordinated in the motor parks and stop disturbing drivers to hasten up.
