  • Naval chief inaugurates Ratings’ quarters in Abuja

    The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, on Wednesday, inaugurated a 36 apartments for Senior Ratings of the Nigerian Navy as part of efforts to boost the welfare of personnel.
    Performing the ceremony in Abuja, Ogalla said the quarters comprised six blocks of buildings housing 12 units of three-bedroom apartments and 18 units of two-bedroom aprtments.
    He said that construction of the building quarters was in line with his commitment to enhance the welfare of personnel of the navy.
    Speaking with newsmen, the Commander of Naval Unit, Abuja, Commodore Tanko Lengaya, said that the welfare of personnel in the area of accommodation had been a pressing issue before the assumption of office of the current CNS.
    Lengaya said the new quarters located in Kubwa was one of the many being provided  nationwide for personnel to ensure that the naval ratings get befitting shelters.
    “This will go a long way to reducing the challenges of accommodation for the ratings and this will be permanent accommodation for the senior rates,” he said.
    The commander said that the presence of the navy personnel in the Kubwa area would assist in terms of coordinating security in the area.
    He congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to take good care of the accommodation. (NAN)

  • Navy seeks special court for maritime cases

    The Nigerian Navy has advocated the establishment of Special Maritime Court to expedite adjudication on maritime cases.
    The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, made the call on Friday in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Malam Jibrin Baba-Ndace.
    Ogalla, represented by the Navy Director of Information,  Commodore Adams Aliyu, said maritime cases, which starts from surveillance, arrest to conviction, needed speedy dispensation.
    “Based on the mandate to eliminate the menace of oil theft, we have launched Operation Delta Security in Warri to combat oil theft.
    “So far, we have made remarkable progress in arrest, seizure and deactivation of illegal storage tanks, refineries,” he said.
    The Naval boss said he was in VON office, to strengthen Nigerian Navy’s relationship and corporation with media houses, adding that VON was strategic.
    On his mission for the Nigerian Navy,  Ogalla said: “it is to have a highly motivated and professional Naval Force capable of shaping the security outcome within Nigeria’s maritime domain and land based enhancement in fulfillment of our national interest.
    “To achieve the mission, I have a vision which is to maintain and equip a professional, competent and ethical naval force leveraging on all national power for effective defence of Nigeria’s  maritime interest against all forms of threats.
    “All these is also to secure maritime environment in the Gulf of Guinea to enable economy prosperity in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda which birthed the Ministry of Blue Economy”.
    The Naval boss said the Navy was ready to partner with VON in propagating its vision, mission, programmes and activities.
    On his part, the VON boss observed that one of the biggest challenges facing the Nigerian Armed Forces was that not much was being heard about them.
    He underscored the need to do a lot in telling the story of Nigerian Navy, Army and the Air Force as well as the readiness of his organisation to partner with the Navy.
    “You have a willing partner in VON. We have no other job than to tell the stories of Nigeria, Nigerians, Africa and Africans. As an institution, we do it on a daily basis in eight languages.
    “We broadcast in four local languages of Hausa, Igbo Yoruba and Fulfulde. The foreign languages include, English, Arabic, French and Swahili. But we are looking forward to broadcast in Mandarin and Portuguese.
    “I want to assure you that right away, I am offering the Nigerian Navy a dedicated broadcast programme.
    “It will be a weekly programme. We are going to work out the name, time and how to generate content for it,” he said
    Baba-Ndace urged Nigerians to understand the value of the armed forces as an investment of national power, adding that, once they start diminishing it, they are diminishing national power.
    He appreciated Ogalla and urged him to continue on the tradition of maintaining stability with Nigeria’s maritime waters.(NAN)

  • Ramadan: Ashraaf Foundation, Armed Forces wants citizen to balance religious rites, safety, national security

    Ashraaf Islamic Foundation, the Nigerian Armed Forces and others have called on Muslims across the country to always seeks ways to balance religious rites, public safety and national security.
    They made the call at the 7th Annual Ramadan Lecture and Prayers for the Nation on Saturday in Abuja.
    The Lecture with the theme; ‘Balancing Religious Rites and Public Safety: The Intersection of Ramadan, Hajj and National Security’ was organised by the Foundation.
    The Chairman/Founder of the Foundation, Dr Sharafudeen Aliagan said the theme is a reflection of what is happening in the country, adding that it is wrong to sit on the fence when things are going wrong.
    According to him, public safety and national security are very important in the life of each and everyone of us.
    “So, we believe that in trying to observe the religious rites, we should be conscious of public safety and national security.
    “Islam has five pillars as parts of the regions rites; strong believe in the oneness of Allah, believe in the messengers of Allah, Zakat, Fasting in the month of Ramadan and Hajj.
    “In observing the Ramadan and fasting, we are to be conscious of public safety and national security. A fasting Muslim would not think of perpetrating evil.
    “He or she would be conscious of Allah along the spirit of Ramadan as a Holy Month, and it worthy to also note that, the Holy Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan.
    “So all these will informed the consciousness of a fasting Muslim that Public safety and national security is very important and without them, we can’t have anything moving as far as the country is concerned,” Aliagan said.
    He further explained that Hajj as one of the fifth pillars of Islam is one of the religious rites which a muslim must be well prepared before he or she observed it.
    According to him, the preparation include, the consciousness of worshipping Allah, fear of God, closeness to Allah and having a clean heart.
    He stressed that a Muslim could not go to Hajj with an evil mind, adding that Islam is peace, harmony amd tranquility, and in going to hajj, one has to be conscious of peace, harmony amd tranquility.
    “If you fear Allah, you would not involve in kidnapping, perpetrate evil, go against the law of the land or do something that will be detrimental to the growth of the country.
    Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa represented by the Director of Support Services at the Defence Headquarters, Maj.-Gen. Olatunji Bello urged Muslims to pray for the country regarding the issue of insecurity.
    Musa said he held in high esteem the Foundation for hosting the lecture and exploring ways including prayers for the nation to ensure that we overcome insecurity in no distant time.
    “Let me correct a misconception; insecurity has always been in Nigeria and everywhere in the world. The only issue here is the social media that amplifies everything.
    “The armed forces in the country has been doing a lot to deal with insecurity. We work assiduously with traditional rulers and others all over the country to ensure that everyone in this country is safe.
    “We keep the nation safe, especially in the spirit of Ramadan. We want all Muslims to know that, in this period, we are redoubling our efforts to ensure that there is absolutely security amd peace in the land,” Musa assured.
    Similarly, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, represented by the Director of Islamic Affairs at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Air Commodore Lawal Lukman commended Ashraaf Islamic Foundation for organising the lecture.
    According to him, the Nigerian Air force is not only concerning about how to drop bombs and missiles, but also the spiritual well-being of its officers and the members of their families.
    “When we guide our officers and their families towards getting closer to their creator, the more they become better in the society.
    “However the efforts of our soldiers are yielding fruits and in our barracks, we don’t have issues, because we have religious peace, harmony and tranquility,” Abubakar said.
    In same vein, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla represented by the Director of Policy at the Naval Headquarters, Real Adm. Malami Haruna said the theme of the lecture was vital for discussion.
    He further explained that it is very important to find a permanent balance between religious organisations and ensuring public safety and national security.
    “As we know, during the month of Ramadan, it is necessary to consider actions that will impact and contribute to the well-being of our people and country.
    “The operation environment in place for the Nigerian Armed forces must be resolute to achieve the objective of restoring normalcy in our land,”  (NAN)

  • Nigerian Navy rescues Cameroonian fishing vessel

    The Nigerian Navy (NN) says it has rescued a Cameroonian registered fishing vessel, MFV AFKI, which drifted off its course since Oct. 24 with two crew members on board.

    The Director of Naval Information, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, said in a statement on Monday in Abuja, that the Nigerian Navy received a distress information about the missing vessel on Nov. 1.

    Ayo-Vaughan said information received from the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria indicated that the vessel was heading to Congo Kinshasa after it left Bangul in Gambia when it drifted off course.

    He said that while in transit, the vessel suffered depleted fuel to her propulsion engines which resulted to her drifting off the coast of Sao Tome and Principe into the Nigeria’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

    “Unfortunately, all efforts by the vessel owners to trace its location for possible rescue proved abortive.

    “However, further surveillance revealed that the last known location of the vessel was as at about 72 nautical miles from the Nigerian coast.

    “Consequently, the NN swiftly deployed Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DORINA at its Maritime Domain Awareness facilities for Search and Rescue Operation.

    “Accordingly, on Nov. 17 at about 20:00 hours, after frantic surveillance by the deployed NN platform, NNS DORINA traced and made contact with the vessel, 17 nautical miles off Pennington terminal,” he said.

    Ayo-Vaughan said that due diligence was made to ascertain the status of the vessel and was discovered that it had no incriminating items onboard and was subsequently towed to Escravos in Delta.

    According to him, the NN Forward Operating Base in Escravos took custody of the fishing vessel for further administrative procedures in preparation for handover to the Netherlands embassy.

    “The NN wishes to use this opportunity to once again reassure seafarers and indeed other maritime operators of its commitments to collaborate with local and strategic partners and allies.

    “To ensure the safety and security of vessels as well as crew members who carry out legitimate businesses in or transiting Nigerian maritime environment.
