Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, says no fewer than 90 Independent Monitors for the National Social Investment  Programmes (NSIP) have been engaged and trained in Kogi to monitor the implementation of programmes in the state.

Farouq, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja signed by Mrs Rhoda Iliya, the deputy director of information in the ministry, said the monitors would monitor the beneficiaries in their localities.

The Minister, represented by Hajiya Safiya Sani, the Assistant Director, Planning, Research and Statistics in the Ministry, said the monitoring was to ensure that the primary objectives of the programmes were achieved.

According to her, the monitoring of the beneficiaries would be within their locality, such as in Schools, households and markets.

“While this is the initial training to get you acquainted with your schedule of duties,  the ministry will ensure you continue to receive regular training and guidance for effective monitoring within communities you are assigned to.

“You will be closely supervised by officials of the ministry, and your activities will also be monitored by the ministry and other stakeholders at the state level,” Farouq said.

The Minister warned that the Ministry would not hesitate to take any monitor off the programme, if found violating the terms of engagement.

“We are also working with security agencies like DSS, EFCC and ICPC to monitor the programmes.

“If found engaging in any form of malpractice or fraud,  you will be handed over to them for investigation and prosecution,” Farouq said.

She, however, urged them to carry out their responsibilities with utmost diligence and sincerity.

Similarly, the representative of the Focal Person in charge of NSIP in the state, Hajiya Khadijat Karibo, and that of the Director General, National Orientation Agency, Amb. Mohammed Abdullahi, commended the federal government.

They agreed that initiating social intervention programmes aimed at lifting Nigerians out of poverty was a welcome development.

They called on the monitors to be committed to their assignments and be transparent and honest in the discharge of their duties. (NAN)
