The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has blamed Nigerians who request the services of non professionals in building, saying this has largely contributed to quackery in the sector.
Mr Aliyu Ova, Chairman, Builders’ Congress Committee made this known in Abuja on Saturday at a news conference to herald the 2020 Builders’ Congress coming up on Dec.8 and 9.
Ova said that the law establishing CORBON mandates disciplinary action on persons caught culpable of violating the code of ethics of the profession.
He urged clients to report any case of misconduct of registered personnels to CORBON to facilitate interrogation.
According to him, in the law of CORBON, there is what we called disciplinary tribunal set up to investigate misconduct.
” The law provides that whoever will not work in accordance with the ethics of the profession will be handed over to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.
” In the years past, we have summoned our members on professional indiscipline and treat them in accordance to the code of ethics but however we have not prosecuted because we have to thoroughly investigate first and find the person culpable before punishment.
” Some of these quacks emanate from different professions like masonry, tiling and the contribution to quackery in Nigeria is largely by the general public. You choose to give your property to whoever to develop for you.
” It is your right and responsibilities to give it to the qualified personnels from design stage to the finishing stage. But when you call craftsmen as engineers to handle your property without knowing the rudiment of building, the repercussions is collapse.
” It is difficult in our own space to control clients because quackery starts from clients because they hire who they chose to hire.”
Ova added that 79 new registered builders would be inducted Dec.9 as the 2020 second batch of inductees, noting that 201 personnels were inducted in September.
He said that the council would as well award eminent Nigerians and industries practitioners for theirs positive contribution to the built sector.
” In addition, we also have awards for some eminent Nigerians. There is leadership award for the minister of FCT and a lot of national awards, lifetime award and post humous award.
“Award of excellence and production quality will also be given to producers such as Dangote, Julius Berger, Oladele Construction Nigeria limited and others for sustaining the industry,” he said.
The event with the theme:” Sustainable Development Policies Practices and Technologies in Construction” is going to be both virtual and physical in line with COVID-19 protocols.
